A LITTLE KNOW-HOW GOES A LONG WAY

Container grades, without the guesswork

Condition matters more than a tidy label. Ask what has been checked on the actual container and what is included in writing.

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE BUYING

Different histories. Different checks.

New / single-trip

Usually manufactured overseas and used for an initial cargo journey. Expect less wear than a used unit, but handling marks or small dents may still be present. Ask for current photographs.

Used for storage

A container with a working history. Cosmetic dents, surface rust and repairs may be present. Confirm the floor, doors, seals and weather resistance required for your use.

Wind and watertight

A condition description about keeping weather out when closed. Ask how and when that condition was checked. It does not certify a container for international shipping.

Cargo-worthy

A description relating to suitability for transport. If shipping is your goal, ask for the relevant inspection and current certification accepted by your carrier.

Refurbished

Work such as repairs or repainting may have been carried out. Ask exactly what was repaired and whether the roof, underside and doors were checked before painting.

As-is

The container is offered in its disclosed condition. Do not assume it is watertight or fit for storage. Review defects, intended use and the written terms carefully.

Five things to check before saying yes

  • Roof and walls: ask about corrosion, holes, patches and water pooling.
  • Doors and seals: check both doors open, close and latch properly.
  • Floor: look for soft areas, damage, staining or strong odours.
  • Repairs and underside: request photographs and a description of the work.
  • Written description: record the grade, known defects, inclusions and any warranty offered.

A grade does not make a standard container suitable for people to live in, hazardous goods or temperature-sensitive storage. Explain your intended use first.
